Environmentally appropriate forest management ensures that the production of wood, non-wood products and ecosystem services preserves the biodiversity, productivity and ecological processes of the forest. Socially beneficial forest management helps local people and society at large to enjoy long-term benefits, and strongly encourages local people to maintain forest resources and adhere to long-term management plans. Economically sound forest management means that forest activities are structured and managed in such a way that they are sufficiently profitable without generating financial profit at the expense of forest resources, the ecosystem or affected communities (FSC Principles, 2015).<\/p>\n
With its guidelines and principles, FSC helps to achieve 14 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) out of a total of 17 goals. FSC helps achieve sustainable forest management, which is one of the goals of SDG 15 (Life on Land). The broad environmental, social and economic focus of the FSC forest management principles also contributes to the Sustainable Development Goals, which focus on poverty, equality, natural resources, production and consumption patterns, decent work, climate change, inclusive and responsible societies and global partnerships (FSC). .<\/p>\n
