What wood is best for making salad bowls?

Once we’ve identified the unsafe bowls, it’s time to decide which wood is best for us.

There are many great woods out there, but when it comes to making bowls, not all are created equal.

Because we are so proud of our bowls, we only use wood from trees that have grown in harsh climates. Let’s forget about those trees that bask in the sun 365 days a year. We love our tough, winter-tested wood. The kind that grow nice and slow, giving them tight grains and a strong, dense density. And the kind of wood you want for your salad bowl. Which ones do we recommend?

CHERRY

Cherry is one of the best types of wood for your salad bowl. It’s definitely our favorite and we use it to make almost all of our wood pieces. The heart of the cherry (the darker, inner part of the tree) is rich and dark, while the sapwood (the lighter, outer part of the tree) is creamy and white, providing a wonderful contrast. The natural mineral deposits in the wood show through the black stains for a unique look and presentation, making each bowl truly unique.

Another great advantage of cherry is that it not only lasts forever, but also gains in quality as it ages. Over time, your bowl will actually look richer, darker, and even more beautiful than when you first bought it. In addition, cherry wood bowls do not need to be painted or filled, so they are 100% food safe. If you are looking for one of the most trusted woods among craftsmen, it is cherry.

MAPLE

Although cherry is our first choice, maple is a close second. If you like a darker wood, it might not be as striking, but it’s still very durable, attractive, and safe for food use. It has a white pasty presentation, giving it a rustic beauty that can be very charming – and like all the best woods, it gets better and brighter with age.

WALNUT

Walnut salad bowls not only display a beautiful contrast of light and dark brown colors, but also a deep walnut aroma that sets them apart from all other types of wood. Food can often take on some of the aroma of the wood, which may or may not be something you enjoy. Walnut is also one of the more durable woods on the market.
